By M. M. MacLellanAfter a few days away from our little house on the Manitoba prairie – extraordinary days, but multi-steps away from the soothing familiarity of routine - I was feeling the need to reconnect with the earth and pull focus. There’s a full moon tonight – want to go for a ski?? It was a mild, windless evening. The full Snow Moon rose buttercream as we set out across the shimmering fields to the long, haunting shadows of the woods. Soon…enclosed by darkness. But guided by the bright, soft light above, we glided up - then down - and up again over the drifted banks on diamond-encrusted paths.
It is whispered by the elders that the Snow Moon or Hunger Moon was so-named by First Nations tribes in response to the arduous hunting challenges faced during the deep snows of February. Though my body did not want for food, my spirit craved this silent, silver night. While the moon her watch is keeping All through the night While the weary world is sleeping All through the night O'er thy spirit gently stealing Visions of delight revealing Breathes a pure and holy feeling All through the night ~traditional Welsh folksong
