renee cronley“Genuine poetry can communicate before it is understood.” —T.S. Eliot Poetry means different things to different people. It’s a special form of artistic expression because so much needs to be said with so few words. My favourites are the ones that engage the five senses and pack a sensory punch while maintaining form, cadence, and emotional appeal. I love the way a poem strikes the ear with the turn of a rhyme and its use of various literary devices. My favourite part of writing poetry is that I get to play with language. There are so many suggestions to pack between the lines when one word has multiple meanings. Fitting them all together just the right way is like piecing together a puzzle. It’s intellectually stimulating, and the process is cathartic. It keeps me tuned with my internal and external landscape and inspires truths at any given moment.
I recently discovered is that poetry seems to be my cure for writer’s block when I’m working on stories—it blossoms ideas that I never knew I had by tapping into a different creative channel which either removes the block or allows me to see around it. Poetry is often written in a way that’s difficult to understand, which is why many people don’t like it. But reading poetry is another method of engaging emotions to find deeper meaning, stretching the boundaries of imagination, and expanding linguistic capabilities. The right poem can help the reader find the right words to express emotions and gain a new perspective. Good poetry provokes thought and can prod at a part of us we never knew was asleep.
